Standard Ameraucana Hens. Most of our hens resemble the hen on the left
Ameraucana (Easter Egger) The Breed Ameraucana is a unique breed that has been a topic of controversy ever since it was first debeloped in the United States. Sometimes mistaken for the Araucana, that were transported to the United States from South America in the 1920's which are rumpless and have ear tufts.
Ameraucana have beards and muffs and are not rumpless as the Araucanas. The Ameraucana also lacks the death gene that the Araucana has, making it an easier chicken to raise.
The Ameraucana chickens were bred primarily for their novel characteristic of blue eggs and even have blue (or "slate") legs. It is, however, a dual purpose bird that has a well-fleshed carcass.
They are especially docile and are winter hardy; but are not good setters so an incubator or other breed of broody hen is often nessesary if breeding is desired.

Cochins became famous in the 1800s when this Chinese breed was given as a gift to Queen Victoria of England, who absolutely adored them.
This breed is a large heavy breed weighing 9 - 12 pounds. The comb is single with no crest. Legs are feathered which only adds to their charm.
Recognized varieties can be: Black, Buff, Partridge, White, Barred, Brown Red, Golden Laced, Mottled, Silver Laced, Birchen, Blue, Columbian, Red
Maturity starts a little later than other, smaller fowl; but, often they begin to lay before 24 weeks. Egg laying is fair with hens producing medium size brown eggs. Cochins make good mothers, and are often used as broody hens to set eggs for other fowl.
This variety is hardy in winter and bears confinement well. They will not fly out of a fenced area as will most lighter weight breeds.
They are especially docile and are easily handled. Their personality is both peaceful and friendly and they make wonderful pets.
